Though the tone of the film is quite soft and melancholic, never would one feel bored. Hamaguchi took the short story by Murakami and expanded it- lacing it with a very predominant theme of the theatre- and showed how art makes us face ourselves. Every shot is screenshot-worthy. The expression of every character and their reactions are natural. It is a story of suppressed pain and hatred, and how one deals with it.
I would describe that the beauty of this masterpiece is the peace and subtlety that Ryūsuke Hamaguchi manages to project in this film, where it becomes a journey that takes us to know the inner pain, ego and despair in the characters telling us that if we listen to each other, we discover that we have many points in common. I really found a lot of peace in the 179 minutes of this film. Essential Cinema. [5/5]
I guess the best personal compliment I can give is that "Drive my car" is as rich as Antonioni's "Incommunicability Trilogy" at it's finest moments. Kafuku's theater career sets the ground for the permanent tension between creativity, acting and one's personal experience (notably of love, loss, and grief), in a world of everlasting incommunicability. Brilliant scenes with actors speaking their own language onstage.
Never before has a Saab 900 Turbo looked so good, or carried so much cinematic drama. A tender film that hums along for over two hours as a cast of unusual, hard and often flawed characters ultimately venture to confront the haunting past. Slow, entrancing, surprising, extraordinary.
